Venezuela's Chavez to visit New York
By Aleksander Boyd
London 17 September 2004 - Last night I wrote a brief note regarding a possible visit of Hugo Chavez to Washington to assist to the OAS' new Secretary General swearing act. A Vcrisis reader was kind enough to send me a link whose contents I am reproducing here. Ergo one does not have to be Sherlock to conclude that Chavez is going to rock the house and in that sense I can only hope that Venezuelan activists in the USA will give him a reception worthy of a life President, as he fancies to be. If pro fox hunters can break into England's parliament and Fathers 4 Justice can pull out stunts such as climbing walls of Buckingham Palace, certainly the visit of a banana republic president can be made miserable just by following him around whilst banging pots!!

Subject: Press conference regarding the three-day visit to New York by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
Location: International Action Center, 39 West 14th Street, 2nd Floor
Date: Friday September 17, 2004 at 12:00 noon.
President Hugo Chavez will be in New York September 20, 21 and 22 to attend the annual session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
President Chavez will also take part in a Night of Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution at Riverside Church located at 475 Riverside Drive on Monday, September 20th. Among the participants in this night of solidarity will Harry Belafonte, Susan Sarandon and Danny Glover and Nobel Award winner in literature Toni Morrison. He will also participate in rallies to be held in front of the United Nations September 21 and 22nd, between 11:00am and 6:00pm.
President Chavez’ visit to New York comes after a recent resounding victory in a referendum on his presidency which he won by nearly 60 percent of the vote. The vote ratified the enactment of legislation granting land reform, the strengthening of women’s and gay rights, construction of hundreds of new schools and hospitals, and the use of oil revenues for social programs.
The events in which he will participate have the purpose of rejecting the hostility and confrontational policies of the US government towards Venezuela and will express the solidarity of the American people with the people of Venezuela and the democratic government they have chosen by an overwhelming majority.
